Falkland Islands

My first visit to the Falkland Islands was in 1982 and I’ve been lucky enough to go back many times since. If you’re not a city person and enjoy space and wildlife, then the Falkland Islands are for you. The photographic opportunities are wonderful, although I discovered the problems of using a long non-zoom lens when I couldn’t photograph the striated caracara sitting on my boot!

Penguins are one of the star attractions – for most people the king penguin is the “must see”, but the Gentoo, Magellenic, and comical Rock Hopper penguins are equally fascinating to watch. Add to that elephant seals (watch out for the males who can move remarkably fast) albatrosses and other birds, killer whales and dolphins. It’s a paradise for anyone who enjoys wildlife at close quarters.
